8 MONTHS TO GO - WHAT HAVEN'T YOU CONSIDERED YET?

Robust preparation begins when you move beyond “Am I on track?” and start asking: “What haven’t I considered yet?”

Preparing for an Atlantic crossing isn’t only about building a timeline.

Most skippers can create a schedule, find contractors and conduct sea trials. But that is only part of the preparation challenge - the real risk lies in what isn’t on the plan.

The most expensive preparation problems are rarely dramatic failures, they’re usually late discoveries;

  • You learn your insurers require a recent hull survey for your 15 year-old boat, before you depart

  • A rig inspection in Las Palmas reveals a broken strand on the swaged end of a D3 just days before departure

  • A routine engine service that didn’t include a deeper system inspection, failed to identify a blocked heat exchanger which overheated on the way to the start.

These are common problems that we hear about on the ARC start line. But the challenge was these issues surfaced late, resulting in increased costs, delays, compromises and created avoidable pressure on the skipper.

On initial inspection this engine and end cap appear well maintained; no signs of leaks, corrosion or other issues.

Removing the end cap reveals significant blockage within the heat exchanger. If unaddressed, this will result in engine over-heating and an expensive repair.

WHAT THE MOST RELAXED SKIPPERS DO DIFFERENTLY

The skippers who arrive in Las Palmas feeling calm and confident aren’t simply well organised.

They thoroughly understand each component within a system and it’s maintenance requirements;

They know the maintenance regime for their type of rudder bearings. They know how loose the tension on the leeward shroud should be. They know how to spot crevice corrosion on a stainless rig fitting.

They have thought through the full impact of ocean sailing on their boat’s systems, considering longer periods at sea, the impact of warmer water and air temperatures, and their requirements beyond the finish line.

They’ve also questioned what they might not yet know.

They’ve built time or processes into their programme to uncover and resolve issues properly, and thoroughly test new installs or upgrades before arriving in the Canaries.

PLANNING CREATES FLEXIBILITY.  EXPERIENCE IDENIFIES RISK

A structured preparation timeline gives you room to manoeuvre.

Booking contractors early secures your slot in a convenient boat yard, ordering sails in the winter can be more cost effective and test sails before departure allows time to tweak settings and fix faults.

But the value of that timeline depends on what you put into it.

Understanding what actually needs checking is what prevents late surprises.

Atlantic preparation requires a shift in thinking — from maintaining a boat for coastal cruising to building resilience for weeks offshore. That shift is where blind spots often sit.

Preparation becomes more robust when you move beyond “Are we ready?” and start asking “Where might the gaps be?”

BRINGING IN EXPERIENCE EARLY

If you’ve already completed multiple ocean passages, you may recognise many of these checks instinctively.

If this is your first Atlantic crossing — or your first in this particular boat — identifying blind spots early can make a significant difference to both cost and confidence.

Bringing in external experience at the planning stage almost always saves time and money in the long run, simply by uncovering issues while there are still options available.

A good timeline gives you flexibility.
The right input gives you visibility.
